In Focus: Controlling coronavirus at conferences

With several key exhibitions and conferences on the horizon, Simon Jones asks what organisers are doing to instil confidence among delegates

Conferences and trade shows may seem like a distant memory, but after a few false starts, events now have a realistic chance of taking place on schedule as the world slowly moves on from the coronavirus pandemic.

In the UK, the vaccine rollout and easing of coronavirus lockdown legislation has meant brought a sense of normality to people’s lives but concerns remain about infection control measures in public places and spread of the virus.

Several conferences in September and October are set to take place in England, so what are the infection control protocols being implemented by event organisers? For SightCare’s conference on September 19-20 at the Telford Convention Centre, attendees will have to show proof of vaccination via their NHS Passport or require proof of a negative lateral flow test 24 hours prior to attending. ‘All attendees will also be encouraged to wear a face covering when moving around the venue and to maintain social distancing where possible,’ SightCare chairman John French told Optician last week.
