Discussion- This is a scenario that could present to any colleague in practice and so this discussion is relevant to the whole practice team.  Ideally there would be an optometrist present and able to perform an eye examination, as it is very difficult to make a diagnosis without this.  However in this case there is no one available.

This is clearly something that could be serious, perhaps a retinal detachment as the symptoms are typical of this condition.  If a detachment is undetected and untreated it can lead to permanent loss of vision in the affected eye. Hence the patient requires urgent investigation.
