BCLA argues merits of 'no water' warnings

A spate of national press stories about wearers losing eyes to infections has prompted the BCLA to lobby manufacturers to put a 'no water' warning on contact lens packaging.

BCLA president Dr Catharine Chisholm said: 'The BCLA is aware of the cases of CL-related corneal infections that have featured in the press in recent weeks and would like to reassure eye care practitioners and CL wearers that this is very unlikely to relate to an increased incidence of microbial keratitis. We believe it relates to the focus of the press on this topic since the original, horrendous case of Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK) that resulted in the loss of an eye.'
