A listening event to discuss the eye health needs of people with learning disabilities was held on January 19 in London.
Jointly hosted by SeeAbility, Mencap, the RNIB and the Eye Health Alliance, the event was supported by the All Party Parliamentary Group for Eye Health and Visual Impairment (APPG for EHVI).
MPs worked with the interested parties to discuss how eye care and vision for people with learning disabilities in the UK could be improved.The consensus was that the key areas which need to be addressed were awareness, accessibility, communication, changing attitudes and training.
Chair of the APPG for EHVI Sandra Gidley MP said: 'One in three people with a learning disability who has a sight problem has difficulty accessing care and treatment. As a consequence the majority have never even had a sight test.'
