Careers in Optics pilot wins more plaudits

Education

An initiative to raise awareness of optics in schools has been shortlisted for two further awards - as an official timetable takes shape for the new term.

The Careers in Optics working group has been shortlisted for The Personnel Today Award 2011 in the innovation in recruitment category and the Recruitment Business Awards 2011 for student recruitment. It follows success in the Recruiter Awards for Excellence 2011 in May.

Following a successful pilot scheme last term, workshops will take place across UK schools this autumn.

The working group has also set up training for optometrists looking to get involved with the workshops, which use the principles of 3D vision as a springboard for children to learn about illusions, light and vision.

Training for optometrists and dispensing opticians will take place in Plymouth on September 13, Glasgow on September 19, and Newcastle on September 20, with each between 6-8pm.

Careers in Optics was founded in June 2010 through a tie-up between optical bodies, employers and universities.

Professor David Thomson, chair of the group, said: 'I am absolutely delighted that the group's work has been recognised in this way. To be shortlisted for two further awards is a fantastic achievement and testimony to the quality of our work.

'This is a fantastic initiative and an opportunity for practitioners to educate young people about the importance of good eye health and build valuable links within their local community.'
