ClaritiContact lens and solutions manufacturer Sauflon will launch the first UK-made silicone hydrogel (SiH) daily disposable later this year.

Announcing the introduction of Clariti 1 Day at the BCLA Clinical Conference, Sauflon's technical director Howard Griffiths said the lens would be a third generation SiH with high oxygen performance (Dk/t 86), high water content (56 per cent) and low modulus (0.5MPa), as well as an aspheric design.

Initially to be manufactured at the company's facility in Fareham, Hampshire, the lens would incorporate the patented AquaGen process and would be available in a 8.6mm base curve and 14.1 diameter.

Griffiths told Optician that Clariti 1 Day was currently undergoing clinical trials and would be launched in the UK and selected key markets in the 'fourth quarter' of 2009. Johnson & Johnson introduced the world's first SiH one-day lens, Acuvue TruEye, at the BCLA conference last year.
