A group of optometrists has been recognised for being the first to accomplish the College of Optometrists’ enhanced supervisor training with the Optometric Practice Educator (OptPE) affix.
Certificates were presented to the eye care professionals by Dr Gillian Rudduck (pictured centre), president of the College, at the body’s annual general meeting in Birmingham on April 29, 2025.
Optometrists had to complete the College’s new supervisor training, submit their reflections on their practical experience of supervision, and take part in a supervisor-focused peer review. This aimed to highlight the professional’s expertise, commitment for and diligence in their field as supervisors who support students in their work-based learning.
The award is part of enhanced support and development opportunities for supervisors ahead of the College’s move to a new master’s degree in optometry, following the introduction of the new GOC education and training requirements.
Dr Rudduck said: ‘We’re delighted to award the new Optometric Practice Educator affix to the first group of supervisors who have completed the College’s new supervisor training programme. The OptPE affix recognises the commitment and dedication of supervisors who invest their time and expertise in nurturing the next generation of optometrists.’
