Road safety and motoring organisations have criticised government proposals to relax vision standards for car and motorcycle drivers in the UK.
Under plans set out by the Department for Transport in a consultation document last month (News 11.02.11), the number plate test would be retained and made easier by reducing the viewing distance. There would be no requirement for other tests of visual function and drivers would continue to self-certify their fitness to drive.
Campaign group Brake told Optician it was 'bitterly disappointed' by the proposals and called for regular testing of drivers' vision 'using a scientifically recognised method instead of the basic number plate test'.
