Contact lens manufacturer sees 4.7% annual growth

Daysoft has reported sales growth of 4.7% to reach £10.83m in turnover for the 2015 financial year.

The contact lens manufacturer, based in Blantyre, Scotland, posted profits of £1.5m.

Ron Hamilton, Daysoft founder and executive chairman, said: ‘Our consistent success is attributable to Daysoft’s unique business model, daysoft.com against which no other contact lens retailer can price-match fairly.

‘The traditional model for contact lens sale and supply is that the lenses are produced by major manufacturers, shipped to their various country-based distribution centres, then sold and supplied on to high-street opticians who then sell and supply to consumers.

‘By contrast, Daysoft produces all its lenses at our single manufacturing base where we take orders 24/7 from around the world using our advanced e-commerce website and posts direct to wearers’ home or office address. Simple, when you have the know-how.’

Hamilton went on to hail the General Optical Council’s decision in May to continue permitting contact lens substitution amid a lack of evidence of public harm.

He added: ‘Daysoft has successfully sold over 250 million lenses direct to wearers via daysoft.com. Not surprisingly we have attracted extensive ‘scrutiny’ from the major producers and retailers who cannot compete fairly with our brand-substitution capability.’
