When managing dry eye, practitioners should take a holistic approach and use preservative-free treatments wherever possible. This was some of the advice given by a panel of experts convened by Optician in London recently.
The Alcon sponsored round table event gathered representatives from optometry, pharmacy and general medical practice to discuss the best inter-professional approach to managing dry eye. It was agreed that the multifactorial nature of the common condition meant that it was advisable to consider environment, general health, diet and other factors if it was to be adequately managed. All of the panel agreed that preservative-free lubricants were the most appropriate.
Chris Miller, business unit manager of Alcon UK said: 'This was an excellent meeting, demonstrating the need for all professionals with an interest in dry eye to work together. It is also useful to remind practitioners of the importance of prescribing preservative free agents such as Systane Single Dose'.
