Efficiency measures recommended for the DVLA have questioned whether the existing requirement to renew driving licences at age 70 could be extended by a decade.

A review of the DVLA was submitted to roads minister Stephen Hammond last week, calling for efficiencies and continued modernisation.

‘A number of European countries renew driving licences at age 80 or have no limit at all. Early analysis of information held by DVLA suggests this could be introduced with little or no impact on road safety,’ a section of the review said.

Julie Townsend, deputy chief executive of road safety charity Brake, was concerned by the proposal and renewed calls for regular vision screening.
