EIS to take over 'Spectacle Wearer of the Year' event

Spectacle Wearer of the Year, the event which claims to have 'put spectacles firmly back on the style agenda for almost a decade', will be run in 2001 by the Eyecare Information Service.

Since its inception in 1991, the ceremony has been sponsored and managed by Safilo UK. The adoption of the event by EIS is seen as a positive step towards strengthening its underlying healthcare message, although it pledges to retain the celebrity interest that has generated much press and TV coverage. EIS chairperson Ruth Gans Cole said: 'There's no doubt that the event has helped to give spectacles the incredible fashion appeal they enjoy today. We want to build on that, but as the EIS has no commercial ties we will also be able to emphasise the serious message about the need for regular, professional eye care. 'EIS is in a perfect position to develop the event in a way that will encourage people to think about their sight, as well as continuing to promote eyewear as a desirable accessory.' Past winners include Scary Spice Mel B (pictured), Sir Cliff Richard and Ronnie Corbett. Nominations for the 2001 awards will be considered by the EIS board in the New Year. It is seeking the profession's help to find the winners of the male and female Spectacle Wearer of the Year awards, the Sunglass Wearer of the Year and a Lifetime Achievement award for spectacle wearing. Nominations can be sent to EIS Spectacle Wearer of the Year, 2 Gay Street, Bath, BA1 2PH by January 12 2001. EIS is also seeking a sponsorship partner for the event. Ms Gans Cole believes the organisation holds all the credentials to make the event even more successful.
