UK consumers still purchase their sunglasses more frequently at department stores, fashion stores and chemists than at optical practices, according to the latest research from the European Sunglass Association.
This was one finding from the European Consumer Market Study 2004, where 5,000 individuals aged over 16 were interviewed in Great Britain, France, Germany, Spain and Italy.
The survey aimed to give a reliable picture of European sunglass consumer behaviour, and the results were presented at the ESA's annual meeting at Silmo.
Overall, one out of two sunglass owners said they purchased their last pair at an opticians, with Spain at 75 per cent and Italy at 70 per cent. For the UK, Germany and France the figure was under 10 per cent.
Six out of 10 respondents needed vision correction, the majority wearing spectacles.
