A first wave of trainees to complete Specsavers’ new optical apprenticeship scheme have now graduated – with each securing permanent positions.
The group’s one-year apprenticeship, open to suitable applicants over the age of 16 and requiring no previous optical experience, can lead to an optical assistant position.
Specsavers now has 200 apprentices enrolled in its programme with a further 100 anticipated to start in England throughout the rest of this year. Those who complete the programme may then have the opportunity to train to become dispensing assistants through Specsavers’ externally-accredited Level 3 and Level 4 Certificates in optical dispensing.
Specsavers’ senior people development manager Guy Kidd said: ‘We launched this apprenticeship scheme a year ago and are very proud of our first graduates and that they have taken up permanent jobs with us as fully fledged optical assistants.
‘We believe that apprenticeships are a great way to unlock the potential of young people and provide a way for them to embark on successful and fulfilling careers.’
The apprenticeship programme included the completion of the Level 2 Diploma in optical retail, with six weekly assessor visits, observations and online learning and courses. Also under the scheme, apprentices gain experience in welcoming customers, offering advice, booking eye tests, carrying out pre-screening and dispensing spectacles, a statement by Specsavers said.
‘Rather than having to pay tuition fees, our apprentices earn a wage and receive additional benefits including paid holiday,’ added Kidd.
