The French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety (ANSES) has recommended that 3D technologies not be used for children under six and used in moderation for those under 13.
ANSES said there was a lack of data on exposure to 3D technologies and considered it it necessary to conduct further research. Analysis of scientific literature identified different potential symptoms related to 3D exposure, resulting from visual fatigue caused by vergence-accommodation conflict. It pointed out that visual fatigue could be reflected in peri-ocular fatigue and pain, the sensation of dry eyes, visual disorders and extraocular disorders.
The Agency added that in children under six, more severe health effects relating to ‘vergence-accommodation conflict’ in the eyes may occur as a result of the active development of the visual system during this period, especially as the quality of 3D content was very mixed in terms of visual comfort, despite the existence of technical recommendations.
It recommended that children under six not be exposed to 3D technologies, and those under 13 should use them in moderation, while persons subject to certain visual disorders and problems with balance should limit their exposure.
ANSES gave a list of recommendations including continuing to wear spectacles or contact lenses when watching 3D content and not sitting or standing too close to the screen.
