Plans for a new optometry course in the South West of England will be considered by the General Optical Council's (GOC) education committee later this month.
The University of Plymouth's School of Health Professions confirmed that it intended to offer the BSc (Hons) course to sit alongside its current vocational qualifications.
Optician first revealed plans for a new optometry course based in Plymouth late last year (10.12.10) and news of the course has been widely welcomed among employers. The course is expected to start with an intake of 30 students and work closely with the optical profession in the region.
Professor Graham Sewell, head of the School of Health Professions, said: 'The course development team is excited by the possibilities of delivering an optometry programme that both meets the GOC requirements and draws on our considerable experience in other healthcare professional disciplines of utilising innovative teaching and learning strategies.' These will include practical and problem-based learning.
