An open day to mark last month's World Down Syndrome Awareness Day at Williams Optometrists in Benfleet, Essex raised £500 for the Down Syndrome Association and the practice's local branch of the association, Extra21.

Organiser, optometrist Stuart Humfrey, pictured with his son Ollie said: 'We were delighted with the response and pleased that it has helped to raise awareness. It was interesting to note that a significant number of those attending were not aware of the reduced visual ability of those with Down syndrome. As a parent myself, it is easy to find yourself concentrating on other health aspects. Those with Down syndrome rarely complain, consequently, it needs us to speak a little for them on occasion.'

The event saw the launch of new Miraflex frames, supplied by Dibble Optical and designed with a special bridge to improve the fitting of Down syndrome children.
