Notes ahead of the meeting, held on June 17, suggested a decision on the adoption of a licence to practise model would be made but it was decided to defer the decision until a later Council meeting in September.

The GOC said it was not ruling out the idea of adopting the licence to practise approach but more options needed to be explored and further proposals would be prepared for the autumn.

The decision follows the GOC's consultation on revalidation which might take into account the different roles played by registrants. The first of three options suggested that only those in clinical practice would be revalidated and they could be identified by having a licence to practise. Options two and three were that all registrants should be revalidated or revalidated to different degrees respectively.
