Peter Coe has been chosen as the new registrar and chief executive of the General Optical Council, taking up the post on January 1. Richard Wilshin will retire on November 30 after 15 years in the position.
Mr Coe spent eight years as the chief executive of the City and East London Health Authority and has worked for the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts this year. He said that he hoped to contribute to the GOC's self determined regulation as 'one of the clinical professions so essential to the delivery of the NHS Plan'. GOC chairman Rosie Varley said: 'Richard Wilshin will be a hard act to follow. I am delighted that someone of Peter Coe's broad experience and understanding of the developing health regulatory framework is to succeed him.'
