Mr Wilshin, who will continue to advise the Council on statutory regulation and disciplinary matters, will be 61 on November 30 when he leaves the organisation. Appointed registrar in 1985 following the retirement of Jim Devlin, Mr Wilshin is only the third registrar since the formation of the GOC in 1958. He has led the Council through deliberations on the reform of statutory regulation, and has been particularly involved in the process to change the powers of the GOC under the Health Act 1999. A qualified solicitor, Mr Wilshin first worked in private practice before transferring to local government where he held a number of appointments as a lawyer. After local government reorganisation in 1974 he was appointed director of administration in Hampshire, with responsibility for providing the administrative, legal and management services of a local authority. He continued in this post until appointed by the GOC. A statement issued by the Council said Mr Wilshin would keep in touch with the profession. It also stated that GOC chairman Rosie Varley had benefited enormously from Mr Wilshin's expertise and experience during her first year. She said that she was delighted he had agreed to assist the Council on a consultancy basis.
