Internet firm takes PD complaint to the OFT

Online eyewear retailer Metsuki has written to the Office of Fair Trading in its attempt to have the PD measurement put on all prescriptions.

KennedyOnline firm Metsuki has written to the Office of Fair Trading in its attempt to have the PD measurement put on all prescriptions, a campaign that has also received backing from Charles Kennedy MP.

The company has argued that with the trend over the past five years for consumers to purchase prescription eyewear online, a figure it puts at 1 per cent, the General Optical Council has failed to review its regulations in the light of this change. Ewan McFarlane, managing director of Metsuki parent company One Vision Direct, told Optician that in the GOC's mission statement it had a duty to update regulations to keep them 'accurate and current', but in the case of the eye examination this has not been done since 1989. In the intervening period the online eyewear channel had opened.
