A new report released by the French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety (ANSES) has suggested LED lights could cause lasting damage to the retina and disrupt natural sleep patterns.
The 400-page report stated that powerful LED lights, such as those used in streetlamps and car headlights, were phototoxic and could cause irrecoverable loss of retinal cells. ANSES called on officials in France to revise the maximum limit for exposure to the powerful LED lights that emitted blue light in larger amounts.
The ANSES report also said LEDs in phones, tablets and laptop screens did not pose the risk of causing eye damage but suggested that chronic exposure to lower intensity sources could enhance the ageing of retinal tissue and was a contributor to a poor vision.
