The NHS has approved Mainline Instruments' iCare DRSPlus Confocal Fundus Imaging System for use in the national diabetic eye screening (DES) programme.
Following a comprehensive assessment process, the iCare DRSPlus retinal imaging device successfully passed strict clinical standards and AI requirements to be used within the DES programme.
Using white LED illumination combined with confocal scanning, the device produces TrueColor, high-definition images. Compared to traditional fundus cameras, the DRSPlus is said to provide superior image sharpness, optical resolution, and contrast.
According to a 2024 study assessing the diagnostic performance of AI-based diabetic retinopathy (DR) using pseudocolor or LED imaging, the iCare DRSPlus confocal LED camera was found to excel in identifying advanced DR stages, compared to the Optos confocal, ultra-widefield pseudocolor camera.
