The hospital, which turns 200 years old on October 21, has planned a series of events throughout this year.

Its exhibition was opened by the chairman of Central Manchester University Hospitals, Peter Mount and Micheal Oglesby, chairman of sponsors Bruntwood.

It included a range of diverse artworks designed by Lime Arts, highlighting the changing nature of diagnosing and treating eye conditions through the years. Wall panels included imagery of cataract surgery from the 19th Century.

Nicholas Jones, consultant ophthalmic surgeon and chair of the bicentenary organising committee, said: ‘This is a very important year for Manchester Royal Eye Hospital, and I am thrilled to be part of the team organising the bicentenary of one of the world’s most celebrated eye hospitals.

‘This striking display will give our patients and visitors a real insight into the history of the hospital, and we hope they find it as fascinating as we do.’

Manchester Royal Eye Hospital Charity has also launched a Bicentenary Appeal, which aimed to raise £200,000 to mark every year the Hospital has been serving the public.
