Dr Paul Kabasele, a Moorfields Eye Hospital ophthalmologist and church pastor, has died from coronavirus in hospital.
Dr Kabasele was a senior specialty doctor and a major part of the Moorfields eye care team. He was based at Croydon University Hospital for over a decade and treated patients with a range of conditions including glaucoma and uveitis.
Dr Kabasele came from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and was involved in improving the eye health of people in the country. Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust said that he ‘provided an exceptional level of care to his patients, thanks to his warm, reassuring and generous nature.’
David Probert, chief executive at Moorfields Eye Hospital, commented: ‘Paul was incredibly hardworking, kind, gentle and a joy to work with. He will be sorely missed by many and his death is a huge loss to us all. Our thoughts are with Paul’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult and heart-breaking time.’
Nick Strouthidis, medical director at Moorfields, added: 'All of us at Moorfields are devastated by the loss of Dr Paul Kabasele. We are all extremely grateful for both his enormous contribution to ophthalmology and his dedication to his patients and colleagues, and are so very proud that he was part of the Moorfields family.'
