Moorfields Eye Hospital has scheduled a one day course on May 8 about how to set up a nurse-delivered intravitreal injection service.
The hospital has now trained 45 nurse practitioners from its own nursing staff, and said it would continue to train more to meet demands and capacity.
Moorfields’ lead AMD consultant Robin Hamilton said: ‘With the increasing demand for treatment for people with eye conditions such as diabetic macular oedema, retina vein occlusion and age-related macular degeneration, the demands on NHS services will increase exponentially.
‘With this will come the need to train more specialist nurses to deliver intravitreal injections under the supervision of a consultant.’
