New research estimates that more than one million of the 9.5 million UK motorists who wear corrective eyewear swap their spectacles for non-prescription sunglasses to drive in sunny conditions.
The findings, from a survey conducted by Dollond & Aitchison and autoservice company Kwik-Fit, also showed that one in five motorists do not wear sunglasses when driving into the sun. Most of the participating motorists also admitted that they don't look for a UVA or UVB rating when buying sunglasses to drive in.
Dr Rob Hogan, director of professional services at D&A said: 'It is incredibly important that drivers who have been prescribed spectacles or contact lenses wear them while driving, so it is concerning that some people admit they don't.'
The survey helped publicise a joint initiative between Kwik-Fit, D&A and tyre manufacturer Pirelli to provide drivers with eye examinations and designer sunglasses.
Doug McKenzie, Kwik-Fit's marketing director said: 'As summer approaches, our link up with D&A and Pirelli will give our customers the opportunity to always keep a pair of suitable sunglasses in their glove box.
'At the same time we hope to raise the importance of driving with the correct eyewear at a time of year when many motorists are planning even longer journeys.'
The survey was carried out in May by TNS Omnibus among 639 motorists, 33 per cent of whom had been prescribed spectacles for driving.
