Optometrist Stephen Kimberly, who was convicted in court of making indecent photographs of children in July 2010 (News 03.09.10), has been struck off by a General Optical Council fitness to practise committee. The decision revokes the interim order for the suspension of Kimberly's registration made on August 25, 2010. Following his conviction Kimberly is serving a three-year community service order and is listed on the sex offenders register.

Specsavers plans to open new outlets in Benidorm, Marbella and Mallorca. Specsavers Opticas business development manager said that although it might seem a strange time to expand, the Specsavers formula had proven successful even in recessionary times. The company has been encouraged by growth in its four Specsavers Opticas stores in Fuengirola, Calpe, Jávea and Torrevieja.

An optical practitioner in the town of Albir in Spain's Costa Blanca was burgled for the eighth time since opening six years ago. Due to the frequency of thefts, the owner's insurance company no longer wish to insure him and others do not want to offer him insurance according to Euroweekly news.

US lens manufacturer PixelOptics has announced a $45m financing deal led by growth capital provider Safeguard Scientifics. According to the website Vision Monday the financing is comprised of $35m equity investment and $10m venture debt.

Former footballer Dwight Yorke ran the London marathon as part of Team Vision in support of the vision charity to raise funds for blind and visually impaired children. Yorke was supporting the charity due to its work with Dorton House School attended by his son Harvey who is blind. The boy's mother, Katie Price, was also due to run the marathon but pulled out with a knee injury. Yorke completed the race in a time of 3 hours and 31 minutes.
