There will be more staff and better training for those working at Capita on the General Ophthalmic Services (GOS) contracts, announced the new MD of Primary Care Services England, Simon England.

Addressing the National Optical Conference in Birmingham last week, England apologised on behalf of Capita for the problems caused by the contract switchover.

He said: ‘It’s very clear that the service has fell way below expectations of Capita and you all here today. We are working towards having the right controls and number of staff and training so that this doesn’t happen again.’

NHS England MD Jill Matthews blamed subtle local variations in contracts for the problems.
