Norville to close lab

Optical manufacturer Norville Optical announced last week it would close its Bedford-based laboratory in a move towards centralising its prescription lens production.

The company, which operates a number of regional laboratories, also said its Southampton branch would merge with its Tunbridge Wells laboratory. Chairman Frank Norville said the move was in response to 'changing market needs', and that increased demand for higher index and more specialised lenses were to blame. 'To achieve these levels of technical expertise requires high expenditure on advanced and sophisticated equipment. There is a limit to the amount achievable with today's wafer thin Rx margins,' said Mr Norville. He added that service from other Norville prescription locations should benefit from increased resources.
