OCT device added to diabetes screening list

Topcon has gained approval for its 3D OCT-2000 to be added to the list of devices approved by the English National Screening Programme for Diabetic Screening (ENSPDR).

Topcon has gained approval for its 3D OCT-2000 to be added to the list of devices approved by the English National Screening Programme for Diabetic Screening (ENSPDR).

The device is Topcon's latest camera integrating a Spectral Domain OCT, which analyses layers in the retina.

Adam Gregory, IT development manager at ENSPDR, said it was the first approved device with OCT functionality and allowed an accurate diagnosis of abnormalities in the eye.

Topcon illustrated the OCT's pathology detection in a case study of a patient in Scotland examined by Stephen McPherson of McPherson Optometrists. He said OCT allowed small changes to be detected. The ability to monitor conditions accurately over time allowed for earlier diagnosis.
