OO suspended for 12 months

Optometrist Mark Morgan was handed a 12-month suspension by a General Optical Council fitness to practise committee when it heard he falsely recorded intraocular eye pressure (IOP) readings after failing to perform an IOP test as part of eye examinations.

Morgan was alleged to have failed to carry out an IOP test on four occasions while working as a locum between May and August 2010. In three of the instances, he was alleged to have falsely recorded readings.

The committee said it considered the registrant's dishonesty in fabricating optical records to be in the higher end of seriousness because it exposed patients to risk as subsequent clinicians might rely on the readings, which would turn out to be false.
