Optometry Giving Sight has challenged all UK optometrists to donate the fees from their eye exams on World Sight Day, October 11, to help the estimated 13 million children who are blind or visually impaired through lack of access to an eye exam or spectacles.
OGS hopes that staff, patients and students will also support the campaign, to be launched at Independents Day on July 4, by signing up to a regular donation of as little as £2.50 per month. 'There are more than 11,000 optometrists in the UK who see more than 17 million patients each year. If every practice were to donate the fees from their regular eye exams on World Sight Day - or if every optometrist became a regular donor at £10 a month, we would be well on the way to raising the funds needed to eliminate this form of preventable blindness by the year 2020,' said Dr Jo Hollingsworth.
