A US study has found that optometrists and ophthalmologists are more likely to suffer a pain in the neck than their general practitioner colleagues. Of the 100 GPs and eye care practitioners (ECPs) questioned, ECPs reported a significantly higher prevalence of neck pain 46 per cent compared with 21 per cent of GPs. ECPs also reported a higher occurrence of hand and wrist pain 17 per cent versus 7 per cent and lower back pain 26 per cent versus 9 per cent. The study, by the University of Iowa, found that 31 per cent of ECPs considered themselves to be in a high strain job category compared with just 20 per cent of the GPs.
