Australian researcher Brien Holden has been honoured by the American Optometric Association with its ‘Legend’ award. Among other achievements he was credited with masterminding a collaborative programme leading to the development of the silicone hydrogel contact lens. Professor Holden said: ‘A legend – I don’t think so. I have just translated the good work of our people – for a long time.’
A man left permanently blind after his cataract surgery went wrong has made headlines after solving the Rubik’s Cube puzzle. Sameer Doshi told the Daily Mail newspaper this week how he modified the cube using Velcro, gems and stickers for each coloured square. The engineer, from Illinois in the US, managed to complete the 1980s puzzle in nine months, the newspaper reported.
