Herman Snellen's world famous letter chart has reached its 150th anniversary prompting the College of Optometrists to launch a new campaign. The Snellen chart, invented in 1862, was the forerunner to most computerised charts used today, the College said. Its campaign, called Look for the Letters, urges the public to look out for the MCOptom and FCOptom letters on the high street before selecting an optometrist for their eye examination.
Organisers of National Eye Health Week have asked for optometrists to provide case studies ahead of the September 17-23 event. Practitioner stories about sight being saved and the detection of serious health conditions were requested. Francesca Marchetti, chair of National Eye Health Week, said: 'We are keen to recruit as many powerful case study stories as possible so we can raise much needed awareness of eye health in the media.'
