Implantable contact lens treatments (ICL) have grown in popularity as an alternative to laser eye surgery at the Advanced Vision Care (AVC) clinic in London. AVC said its patients were opting for intraocular lenses in particular, because they corrected both distance and near vision at the same time. The clinic provides ICL treatments for prescriptions ranging from -25 to +12, with specialist lenses also available to correct astigmatism up to 5.00D.

Luxottica foundation OneSight has now treated eight million people in the developing world, having been founded in 1988. The landmark patient was Marokey Camara, from The Gambia, who had been struggling to work, cook and thread a needle due to blurred vision. The Gambia clinic was opened for a two-week spell through OneSight's three-year partnership with UK charity Sightsavers.

Optical researcher Strategy with Vision (SWV) has marked 10 years of data crunching with the release of its 2010 International Market Model reports. They include eye care and eyewear information on Europe's top five optical markets France, Italy, Germany, Spain and the UK. The General Optical Council (GOC) has reminded student optometrists and dispensing opticians that the deadline to renew their registration is July 15. The GOC said that 2,034 students were yet to apply for renewal, but must do so by July 15 if they wish to continue their studies next year. Failure to apply on time results in an extra £10 late application fee on top of the £20 fee.
