Opticians Act revisited

The latest in a series of ‘Moot Evenings’ hosted by the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers (WCSM) at the Institute of Optometry in London took the opportunity to discuss the shortcomings of the Opticians Act.

Under the direction of Optical Confederation chairman Don Grocott, a panel comprising ABDO president Peter Black, LOCSU executive chairman Alan Tinger and Peter Coe, a past registrar at the General Optical Council, discussed issues with attendees in an open discussion format and spoke freely under Chatham House identity rules.

One of the issues discussed was whether the act had suffered from the late 1940s era it was formulated in and if GPs had applied pressure at its inception to ensure their own profession was not affected.
