Newport optometrist Peter Hong was awarded an MBE for services to optometry and voluntary service to optometry abroad in the Queen’s New Year Honours List.
He established Peter Hong Opticians 30 years ago and is a teaching associate at Cardiff University. ‘I’m extremely humbled and surprised,’ said Hong, who has helped organise charity projects in Romania, Moldova and Malawi. ‘It’s been great to know that the work has been recognised but this has always been about team effort.’
Hong said he started working in Romania 18 years ago, organising projects with friend Dave Phillips. He became an associate tutor at the school of Optometry in Cardiff University 14 years ago. Further projects in Moldova started about 6 years ago around about the same time that he started working in Malawi along with local ophthalmologist Andrew Waboso and his charities Sight 2020 Direct and the Onani Eye foundation.
