Peter Manning

Dispensing optician Peter Manning, who worked for Melson Wingate for over 50 years, has died. He was 77.

Born on June 11 1926, he originally joined Crookes Optical Works, Melson Wingate's prescription house, but after serving in the RAF during the war, he transferred to the retail side of the profession, initially in Bournemouth. For most of the rest of his career he was the manager of the Oxford branch, though he moved back to be in charge of the Bournemouth outlet in the final few years before his retirement in 1990.
Nigel Wingate, former chairman of Melson Wingate, said: 'Peter had a particular ability to form a strong and dedicated team around him and this resulted not only in the strong growth of the Oxford branch but also in his appointment as area director. I had the pleasure of working under him as part of my own training.'
