More than 80 per cent of independent practitioners have supported a campaign for lighter evenings in the hope they would reduce road accidents.
The difficulties of night-time driving are routinely discussed at eye appointments, a survey found, but less than half of spectacle wearers opt for anti-reflective coatings.
Debbie Bathgate, lens product manager at Rodenstock, which conducted the survey, said: 'Drivers who wear glasses are even more at risk when driving at night, as they suffer glare and dazzle from streetlights and vehicle headlights. They also need to be wary of scratched or smeared lenses which can impede vision.'
The Lighter Later Campaign wants to shift clocks forward by one hour throughout the entire year - moving an hour of daylight from the morning to the evening - but still to put the clocks forward in spring and back in autumn.
