Retired firefighter creates RNIB all-terrain cane

The Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) exclusively launched an All-Terrain Cain (ATC) by Awarewolf Gear to help blind and partially sighted people enjoy hiking and navigate unfamiliar terrain.

The ATC was designed by retired firefighter Dave Epstein from Sedona, Arizona, a keen hiker, who was diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa in 1982 by his ophthalmologist father.

Epstein created the lightweight ATC made from strong titanium alloy when navigating trails became difficult and after discovering there was nothing on the market for blind hikers.

My mission is to get blind and partially sighted people out and on the move. I’d like to encourage others to find the tools they need to help them get where they want to be and to continue to do what they love,’ he said.
