Optrafair will see the College of Optometrists publish a revised version of its Framework for Optometric Referrals document and updated advice on dealing with patients suffering from flashes and floaters.
The Framework for Optometric Referrals has been revised and updated to include guidance following on from the report of the National Eyecare Services Steering Group, the NICE recommendations on photodynamic therapy for age-related macular degeneration, and the new process for visual impairment registration. It also includes guidance on referring via referral service centres, and an updated section on referring the patient with diabetes which follows on from the recommendations of the National Screening Committee. This publication is aimed at all optometrists, but particularly LOCs to help them in their negotiations with local primary care organisations to set up referral protocols or referral refinement schemes.
'There are clear long-term benefits to patients and the healthcare system from reducing unnecessary referrals and ensuring that the referral process is effective,' it stated. 'Collaboration at a local level to ensure that this occurs in an optimal manner is vital.'
