Asda's trial of free fundus photography as part of routine eye tests suggests increased competition among the multiples to offer enhanced eye care services.

With cameras installed in its practices in Scotland, Asda is trialling fundus photography at no additional cost as part of the eye test in two of its practices in England. The retailer revealed that it has plans to implement the service as part of the routine eye test across its practices, but told Optician that these had been delayed.

The news comes as Specsavers launched its new policy of providing free fundus photography throughout most of its practices by holding an educational evening at its Tottenham Court Road practice. The evening was hosted by GMTV general practitioner Dr Hilary Jones who welcomed the move as a way to improve eye health screening in the UK. The free additional service will be available to any patient over the age of 40 who is thought might benefit from photography on the recommendation of either their GP or optometrist.
