Vision Express in Wakefield was one of a series of shops forced to close its doors to rowdy football fans following England’s 1-0 World Cup win against Paraguay earlier this month.

Police and community support officers were called to the Little Westgate shopping precinct after drunken fans spilled out of a Yates’s wine lodge and began shouting abuse at passing shoppers.

Vision Express store director Kelly Plahay said: ‘The fact that there were so many people out there was intimidating. We have a lot of elderly customers who were put off coming to visit us, which affected our trade.

‘I’m not saying people shouldn’t have fun, it should just be within reason,’ she added.

Yates shut its doors to customers for several hours through the afternoon while Police dispelled the rowdy crowd and sent troublesome individuals home. No arrests were made.
