Safilo has introduced its first Fendi eyewear collection, showcasing sunglasses and optical frames aimed at the contemporary, feminine woman.

The new spring/summer 2014 collection is described by the company as featuring sophisticated models with unique shapes and iconic detailing, for example the Fendi monogram and the striped ‘Pequin’ motif of Fendi accessories. Quality materials such as Optyl are used, with a colour palette of refined shades and edgy colour contrasts, as well as an interplay of materials, jewel-like details and shaded or mirrored lenses.

Speaking about the launch of the collection, Ermes Stefanutto, Safilo country manager UK & Ireland said: ‘Safilo’s SS14 debut collection for Fendi is a celebration of the House’s heritage reinterpreted with a modern twist. The styles are sophisticated, with beautiful details designed for a very feminine woman.’

Sunglass (FF 0029/S) (1) and optical frame (FF 0030) (2) are stand-out colour-block models which blend a frame within a frame. Safilo added that the hand-made acetate models ‘combined contrasting dimensions and colours, smooth lines and multifaceted profiles enlivened by transparent hues and refined shades of havana’. The styles have a large silhouette with slim metal temples, a flat hinge and contrasting colours on the temple tips. Options include a light blue/transparent brown combination in the sunglass, with palladium temples and shaded khaki lenses, while the optical frame includes crystal/green with ruthenium temples.

A limited edition sunglass is Baguette model FF 0031/S, which is inspired by the famous Fendi Baguette bag, first introduced in 1997. The individually-numbered sunglasses have a clean upper front profile and softly rounded underside. Temples are embellished with a jewel-like metal detail with the Fendi monogram, like the buckle on the Baguette bag. There are options of a semi-precious tiger’s eye or snowflake stone or a two-tone version.

There is a vintage feel to acetate sunglass (FF 0026/S) and optical frame (FF 0028), softly rounded designs with understated fronts in havana providing a contrast with the bright, vibrant temple colours. There is also a clearly visible metal temple core with contour effect. A signature detail is the striped Pequin rivet motif. Temple options in the sunglass include transparent yellow and dark blue, while in optical there are crystal, transparent green, lilac and fluorescent pink temples.

Another sunglass model is the large butterfly-shaped flat metal design (FF 0017/S), a lightweight style with a striped Pequin motif of gloss varnish and metallic effects framing the lenses. It is described as offering perfect proportions, with an elegant palette, including gloss black/gold with ochre temple tips and shaded dark grey lenses.

Offering a softly rounded cat’s eye is the sunglass (FF 0013/S), with a square-shape (FF 0015) frame, both decorated with the Pequin motif, combined with a precious metal hinge. Once again there are bold colour contrasts between the classic shades of the fronts and the comtemporary temple options, for example blue and pink in the sunglass and coral and burgundy in the optical.

Another introduction is the fashion show sunglass Iridia, described by the company as an architectural shape that blends different materials and ‘gives harmony between a retro-futuristic design and stylish feminine allure’. The front is a retro-inspired cat’s eye shape in Optyl with pyramid-like oversized crystals at the corners. However, lightness is achieved with the combination of a supra design and slim metal temples. The temples have a geometric and flat design and enamel finishing.

Colours are described as ethereal shades, for example transparent smoke grey with blue temple tips and khaki blue mirror lenses, as well as transparent white with black temple tips and grey silver mirror lenses.
