Texas based biotech start-up Selenium has announced into that the Institute for Eye Research at the University of New South Wales in Sydney will conduct laboratory and clinical testing of its antimicrobial contact lenses that use a proprietary selenium coating.

Dr Mark Willcox of the Institute said: 'The Institute for Eye Research is excited about collaborating on this new antibacterial technology and is looking forward to conducting clinical trials of selenium-containing lenses.'

The Selenium technology was developed by Dr Ted Reid and Dr Julian Spallholz at Texas Tech University. Dr Brian Windsor, vice president of the venture capital firm Emerging Technologies Inc, which has set up Selenium, said: 'We are delighted that the Institute will conduct this important programme to show the safety and efficacy of contact lenses coated with selenium.
