Efforts to set a standard of learning for optometry across Europe will be discussed during Silmo at a special event tomorrow (October 22).

The Parisian show will host a presentation by Bob Chappell, president of the European Council of Optometry and Optics (ECOO), and other members of its executive board. Industry figures are expected to hear more details of the ECOO European Diploma in Optometry, how it complements existing national qualifications and will help in moving the profession towards harmonisation.

ECOO's aim is that the diploma should be a common platform, enabling holders to practise optometry anywhere in the EU. As a first step, ECOO has applied to the GOC for official recognition of the diploma, and ECOO will launch its own website early next year.
