Specialists to open eye unit

A £2m hospital, claimed to be the first specialist eye hospital in the country to be funded, developed and run by eye specialists, will open at the end of the year.
The Yorkshire Eye Hospital, situated between Bradford and Leeds at Apperley Bridge, is being established by 18 ophthalmologists. It will provide services for corneal diseases and glaucoma treatments for GPs and optometrists in the area.
Bruce Noble, chairman of the hospital and Leeds consultant surgeon said the project would provide rapid diagnosis and treatment on a day-care basis for many eye problems.
'The levels of interest from optometrists and GPs is very encouraging,' he said. 'The hospital will work in parallel with local services to provide an integrated approach to eye care.'
