Ultralase and Specsavers have announced a strategic partnership which will see Specsavers recommending patients interested in laser eye surgery to Ultralase for consultation.

The partnership will allow Specsavers to offer a support service for patients who decide to undergo laser eye treatment, with its staff receiving accreditation from Ultralase, following professional training, to deliver aftercare appointments.

Specsavers managing director John Perkins claimed the deal would offer an unparalleled level of choice and set a new professional standard in holistic eye care. 'We chose to partner with Ultralase after extensive analysis of the laser eye market over the last two years and having spoken with representatives of dozens of independent surgeons and major national providers of laser eye treatment,' he said.

Revealing one of the reasons for the partnership Perkins said that although Specsavers' core business is glasses and contact lenses, its over-riding concern would always be for its patients' eye health and general well being.

'Ultimately it means good news for our customers, who will now receive an informed recommendation from their trusted optician at their local Specsavers when they are considering this procedure,' he added.

Tony Veverka, Ultralase chief executive officer, commented: 'It very much represents a meeting of minds, with the market leaders in high street optometry, and market leaders in laser eye treatment coming together.'
